Institutional preparedness for NEP

1. Multidisciplinary/interdisciplinary: As an affiliated college of Andhra University, SPACES degree college must adhere to the guidelines of Andhra Pradesh State Council of Higher Education and set of standards created and approved by the State Government. So far, new guidelines for introducing UG programs with multidisciplinary/interdisciplinary courses have not been designed and approved. As and when the affiliating University and APSCHE develops or supplies a curriculum to execute the multidisciplinary/interdisciplinary structure of the New Education Policy SPACES degree college will comply with it. The SPACES degree college is geared to implement multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary courses. Despite this, it is difficult to specify multidisciplinary/ interdisciplinary readiness by SPACES degree college at the present time.
2. Academic bank of credits (ABC): Academic bank of credit provisions recommended in the draft of the NEP to promote numerous entry and exit points from their academic programs. This is a novel concept for earning and depositing credit through national programs such as SWAYAM, NPTEL, and V-Lab. In this provision, it will also be considered for credit transfer and accumulation. As per the guidelines issued by the affiliating University, SPACES degree college has started creating Digi Locker facility to all the students on the roles. 50% of the work pertaining to Academic credit bank (ABC) has been completed as on today.
3. Skill development: As previously said, SPACES degree college is an affiliated college with no scope for designing and implementing its own academic programs. It must adhere to the curriculum prescribed by Andhra University. Regarding skill development, college has entered into MoU with Andhra Pradesh State Skill Development Corporation (APSSDC) and conducting the skill development programs to all the students in the areas of soft skills, employability skills and technical skills. In addition to the skill courses organized by APSSDC, college has designed its own programs and conducted certificate courses by the departments of computer science and commerce. Good number of students have secured placements through the on/off campus drives conducted in association with APSSDC.
4. Appropriate integration of Indian Knowledge system (teaching in Indian Language, culture, using online course): The preservation and development of India's cultural heritage must be a national priority, as it is vital to the nation's identity and economy. In this regard, suitable incorporation of Indian Knowledge system, especially instruction in Indian languages is essential. Languages determine how members of a culture communicate with others, including family, authority, and strangers, as well as the tone of the discourse. To conserve and promote culture, one must preserve and promote the languages of that culture. Institution has excellent ICT infrastructure for conduct of online courses. Promoting cultural values among students through the various activities like SPANDANA. All the teachers have excellent skills to deliver the curriculum in both Telugu and English. Sanskrit has been offered as a core subject to all Telugu-speaking students at the SPACES Degree College.
5. Focus on Outcome based education (OBE): The NEP 2020 objectives for OBE include competency, standard, benchmarks, and achievement of goals. In addition, the OBE includes three components: a theory of education, a systematic framework of education, and a unique instructional practice technique. The SPACES Degree College is prepared to accomplish its goals and objectives in accordance with the University's curriculum structure.
6. Distance education/online education: During the Covid epidemic, all faculty members across all programs performed online classes exceptionally well by utilizing all the available modern online teaching learning platforms. Teachers and students have participated in online instruction and evaluation utilizing various tools. In this aspect, the institution is therefore well-prepared. All the faculty members are well trained through FDP programs in using modern ICT tools. Since SPACES Degree College is affiliated with Andhra University, the college is unable to offer distance education.

4.3 IT Infrastructure
4.3.1 Institution frequently updates its IT facilities and provides sufficient bandwidth for internet connection Describe IT facilities including Wi-Fi with date and nature of updation, available internet bandwidth within a maximum of 500 words
Answer:

Rapid communication, increased access to IT in the home, at work, and in educational establishments, could mean that learning becomes a truly lifelong activity,  in which the pace of technological change forces constant evaluation of the learning process.

SPACES Degree College sets an example by frequently updating its IT facilities and providing sufficient bandwidth for internet connectivity to its stakeholders—students and staff.

  •  SPACES Degree College entered into an agreement with Lexus Networks for providing 60 Mbps of bandwidth over a 1:1 leased line through fibre
  • In addition, the BSNL Fibre Premium plan is subscribed as a backup in case of any disruption.
  •  The configuration of computers in labs is also frequently upgraded to meet the growing demands of academics. 30 HP i5 systems loaded with Windows 8 are procured in the year 2016 apart from the already existing 60 nodes, to enable students to enhance their practical skills in various languages and packages included in their syllabus as well as through add-on courses.
  •  SPACES Degree College is also equipped with overhead projectors and audio-visual equipment to enhance the teaching abilities of the faculty. These projectors release teachers from being bound to chalk and dry-erase boards. Teachers find that Internet is more useful since projectors can display web content to an entire class. One of the advantages of the presentation with overhead projectors is to repeat the slide as per the students’ request.
  •  COVID-19 had a huge effect on the education of children. As it is truly said, “Necessity is the mother of invention.” Educating the children through video conference has been started. Hence, the management of SPACES Degree College took up the cause and started online teaching with the help of video conference. Faculty members are facilitated with advanced tools, such as video conferencing software, online course delivery platforms, and e-learning software.
  • Google Workspace is designed to help individuals, teams and organizations communicate, collaborate, and work more efficiently. The tools are cloud-based, can be accessed from anywhere with an internet connection and are designed to be easy to use and intuitive. SPACES Degree College is tied up with Shivaami, a Google partner, to provide Google Workspace for Education Plus subscriptions to enable the above-mentioned activity. These tools enable faculty members to create innovative and interactive courses, engage with their students online, and deliver lectures from any location.
  • “Libraries store the energy that fuels the imagination, open up windows to the world and inspire us to explore, achieve, and contribute  improving our quality of life. The library is also equipped with eight internet-enabled systems that allow students to browse and upgrade their skills with the data and knowledge available online.
  • Biometric attendance devices are installed for faculty attendance.
  • The activities of the institute are under video surveillance with 22CC cameras.
  • The systems are connected through LAN with an internet facility.

Other facilities:

·        In addition, colleges in Andhra Pradesh have access to Video-conferencing facilities  for academic program and conduct.

7.2 Best Practices
7.2.1 Describe two best practices successfully implemented by the Institution as per NAAC format provided in the Manual
Answer:

SPACES DEGREE COLLEGE has the following two best practices to showcase the achievements of the college:

Best Practice 1

Title of the Practice

Renewable sources of energy (Biogas Plant & solar power plant)

Objectives of the Practice

  • To reduce the reliance on fossil fuels and to reduce the environmental impact of energy production.
  • To produce biogas from organic waste materials such as animal manure, food waste, and agricultural waste. The biogas produced can be used as a renewable energy source for cooking, heating, and electricity generation.
  • To generate electricity from the sun's energy.

The Context

  • Renewable energy is unlimited, but their availability varies across space and time.
  • It reduces the use of fossil fuels.
  • Biogas plant is a sustainable and cost-effective and a way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, as biogas is a clean-burning fuel source.
  • Solar power plants are popular as a renewable energy source due to their low environmental impact and cost-effectiveness. They can be used to power homes and businesses.
  • By installing solar powerplants the college is committed to contribute our planet a better place for the future.

The Practice

Biogas Plant

  • A biogas plant is a type of anaerobic digester that uses wastes of animal, food, and agricultural to produce biogas, a mixture of methane and carbon dioxide.
  • The biogas produced can be used as a fuel for cooking, lighting, and heating.
  • These are unique in the context of Indian higher education because they provide an opportunity for students to learn about the science and technology behind biogas production, the benefits of using biogas as a fuel source, renewable energy and sustainable development.
  • Additionally, biogas plants can be used as a teaching tool to demonstrate

Solar power

  • The Institute has spacious premises including a terrace, which is ideal for rooftop solar installation
  •  The College functions in morning hours only, i.e, during sunshine hours.
  •  Government subsidy of 30% towards solar plant installation
  •  Reduces electricity bills.
  •  Generates revenue if extra power is supplied to the grid.
  •  Long lasting – 20 to 25 years.
  •  Contributes a pollution free and healthy environment.
  •  Demonstration and awareness creation for students

Evidence of Success

The farm in the campus has about 350 animals (both cows and buffaloes combined) and the dairy is attached to a biogas plant. The plant has six digesters and the generation varies between 600 to 800 KW of power a day. While a part of the gas is converted to power, the remaining is processed to produce green cooking gas.

The total installed capacity of the solar power in the campus is 100kVA. The entire energy is used for self consumption during the college working days and also is connected to the grid during holidays and vacations.

Problems Encountered and Resources Required

Some of the problems encountered in biogas plant:

● The main constraint for biogas plants in India is the lack of access to organic matter such as animal waste, food waste, and agricultural waste.

● Biogas plants require a significant amount of energy to operate, which can be expensive.

● Biogas plants require regular maintenance and monitoring.

Some of the challenges in solar power are:

Lack of R&D, modern development facility which impact the development of solar panels, equipment, and inverters to meet the demand.

● Delaminating   and internal corrosion as moisture responsible for internal corrosion.

● Faulty wiring and Micro-cracks affect the effectiveness of the system.

Best Practice 2

Title of the Practice: Bridging the Gap: SPACES Degree College’s Exceptional Placements

The training and placement cell creates the best career opportunity for students, by nurturing them with proper training and deserving job placement.

The facilitators to provide exclusive placement training programs in order to enhance students’ employability

We establish strong relationships with the industry to create enough placement opportunities and striving hard to place the students in their desired companies.

Objectives of the Practice

  • To empower the employability skills of the rural students.
  • To impart the skill sets required to incorporate, by training on the skills and transform the level to match the industry expectations.
  • To boost the students’ confidence levels through training in the areas of communication & soft skills, Arithmetic, and reasoning, C and Java programming along with regular courses.
  • To prepare the students for different levels of selection process such as group discussions and one-to- one interviews.
  • To facilitate placement through an industry interaction program and ascertain information
  • To give wide publicity for campus selections

The Context

The Training and Campus Placement Cell provides a conducive learning environment to enhance the employability skills of the students.

It is responsible for connecting employers, providing career guidance and helping students for job interviews.

The college arranges interaction between the students and industry through seminars and workshops.

The Practice

The Training and Placement Cell is   responsible for providing students with all required skills. It essentially creates awareness on job market and also reduces the gap between academic and industry.

The limitations of the TPC are that it is often limited in its resources and capacity. It is also difficult to ensure that all students have access to the same opportunities, as some may be more privileged than others.
